Wood-burned Weaving Shuttles on Maple

Burned with a Colwood Super Pro 2! These were a real treat to make - a commission for Ashley! I loved designing on such a fun shape. I'm hoping to maybe snag some more to try out on!

The Giant Wood Moth: these rat-sized moths have a wingspan of up to 23cm (about 10 inches) and can weigh as much as 30 grams, making them the heaviest moths in the world

This species (Endoxyla cinereus) is found only in Australia and New Zealand. It has a larval stage that can last 2-3 years, and the larvae spend most of that time eating and tunneling into the wood of eucalyptus trees. Once they are finally ready to pupate, they transform their tunnel into a pupation chamber, and they eventually emerge from the chamber as adult moths.

The adult moths can only survive for a few days after that; like many other lepidopterans, the adults of this species are incapable of feeding, because they do not have any functional mouthparts, so their lifespan is extremely brief. They spend their entire adult lives (which last only a matter of days) searching for a mate and reproducing. In order to accomplish that goal, they must rely on the energy afforded by the fat reserves that they accumulated when they were larvae.

Giant wood moths display a significant degree of sexual dimorphism, as the females are roughly twice the size of the males; they can weigh up to 30 grams, which makes this the heaviest moth species in the world.

In fact, the females are so heavy that they can barely even fly. In order to find a mate, they must crawl to the top of a tree trunk or fence post, release their pheromones, and then simply wait for the males to find them.

i like to buy yarn from thrift shops and antique malls, because vintage wool is excellent quality and a pound of secondhand wool is far cheaper than new wool (and sustainability, using what already exists, etc) but whenever you buy wool secondhand you have to be careful not to bring in moths because once they're in your home and infiltrate your house it's hell to get rid of them, they are the bane of textile crafters everywhere. so i always put the yarn in the freezer for a few weeks, which kills off any potential larvae that may be harboured in the wool, but there is something inherently funny about opening a freezer to find a whole bunch of yarn stuffed in there without context. and this happens to my mother all the time, she opens the freezer to get something for dinner and she has to push past several skeins of yarn to do it lmfao

if i had a nickel for every piece of furry media i've experienced where a group of friends tries to move on from the untimely death of one of their members while there's also a supernatural mystery going on, i would have three nickels, which isn't much but it's weird that it's happened three times

Photos from a lovely, post-Debby weekend in the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Good, strong breeze to drive out the heat and keep the sky vibrant and constantly on the move. The narrow-leaved gentian (Gentiana linearis) is now at peak bloom in the mountains. This enchanting perennial loves damp mountain seeps and bog edges and is pollinated primarily by bumblebees, which are adept at prying open the flowers or just chewing through them if all else fails. The pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) is also in bloom - my mom used these delicate perennials in her dried-flower arrangements.

Very beautiful even though it's meant to look like a glob of bird poop! It looks to me like a pearly wood-nymph moth, Eudryas unio :)
